The difference between the different sencha names is in their taste and aroma. Each gyokuro in our selection is on a spectrum of character from light to rich. Lighter sencha teas like Matsu-no-midori are astringent and less sweet with a short aftertaste. Richer sencha like Kaboku are more sweet and umami-rich, with less astringency and a long aftertaste.
If you are new to Ippodo sencha, we recommend trying Hosen. If you try it and you think you would like a richer character, choose a higher ranked sencha next. If you try it and the flavor is too rich, try a lower ranked sencha next.
